L.A.-based DAX opens Toronto office

Los Angeles-based DAX, a provider of cloud workflow and media-asset management applications and services for screen-entertainment companies, is opening a Toronto office.

The company, which was formerly known as Sample Digital, is opening its first international office to better service U.S. clients shooting in Canada and by Canadian clients shooting worldwide, while they tap into Canadian tax credits.
 
The Canadian operation will be known as DAX Cloud ULC, the company said in a statement Tuesday. It already has a roster of Canadian-based companies, including CBC, CTV, Global, Entertainment One, Take 5 Productions and Lionsgate.
 
The office will be located 693 Queen Street East, and run by managing director Thomas Walden, whose past experience includes positions at Alliance Atlantis, Cineplex Odeon and Concert Productions International.
 
As well, Dan Duffin, formerly of  Toronto post house Creative Post, joins the DAX Canadian team as technical account manager.
 
Steve Hancock is on DAX Cloud’s board of directors. Hancock was founder and CEO of adbeast, the SaaS digital asset management company serving the advertising industry that was then acquired by DG, the North American leader in digital media and advertising distribution services.
 
Patrick Macdonald-King, parent company DAX’s president and CEO, is a Canadian.
 
Canadian-made TV shows currently using the DAX platform include Republic of Doyle, Homeland and Hell on Wheels. U.S. productions include NCIS, New Girl, The Walking Dead, CSI, America’s Next Top Model, Bones, The Mentalist, Two and a Half Men, Glee, How I Met Your Mother, Dexter and Mad Men.
 
Recent feature film productions include Hunger Games, Twilight, 42, Dolphin Tale, Resident Evil 5, Beautiful Creatures, and Mortal Instruments.
